Details regarding the cancellation of the 47th Adachi Fireworks

The 47th Adachi Fireworks, which was scheduled to be held on Saturday, May 31, 2025, has been canceled due to the high possibility of firework remnants falling on residential properties due to strong winds.

We sincerely apologize to everyone who was looking forward to this event.

The details of the cancellation are as follows:

We would like to ask for your continued understanding and cooperation in hosting the Adachi Fireworks.

1. Checking the strength of the north wind

At 5pm on the day, in order to check the wind conditions in the sky, the signal firework (a firework that is launched before the main event, which only produces sound and smoke) that was scheduled for 6:20pm was launched earlier than planned.

(1) Participants

A. Fireworks business operator

B. Explosives Division (Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Metropolitan Police Department, Tokyo Fire Department)

(2) Results

A signal ball was opened near the heads of the paid seats. It was possible to confirm that a strong wind was blowing in the air compared to the wind speed on the ground (measured at 3.6 meters).

2. Decision on whether the event will be held

The organizers, Adachi Ward and the Adachi Ward Tourism Association, have decided to cancel the event.

* Wind forecast

There was no forecast that it would weaken by the time launch began.

3. Reasons for cancellation

(1) There is a high possibility that a large amount of fireworks debris (burnt remains, etc.) will be carried more than 200 meters and fall on private homes.

(2) In the unlikely event that a dud ball occurs, there is a high possibility that it will fall into the audience.

4. Measures for the next event

We will formulate criteria for canceling the Adachi Fireworks due to wind, taking into consideration the following points.

(1) This decision takes into consideration the characteristics of the Arakawa riverbed, where the launch site is located (such as the difference in wind speed between the ground and the sky), and the fact that the launch site is very close to residential areas.

(2) The time for launching the signal ball for wind testing will also be included.

*If the signal ball were launched earlier, the decision to cancel the event could be made sooner.

(3) Install anemometers not only on the riverbed (on the ground) but also on the banks closer to the sky to help make decisions.

(4) The plan will be formulated by the end of the year after consulting with experts and related parties.

Why Adachi Fireworks cannot be held the next day or postponed

The Adachi Fireworks Festival has been canceled for the second year in a row, and we have received requests to postpone it to the next day or to hold it until autumn.

Unfortunately, due to the following reasons, it is currently difficult to postpone or hold the event. We ask for your understanding.

1. Regarding the next day's event

It would be difficult to ensure the same level of security as the previous day, and additional costs would be incurred.

*There have been no postponement dates since the 38th Adachi Fireworks Festival in 2016.

2. Regarding future events

Large amounts of money will be incurred for the fireworks, setting up the venue, arranging for security guards, etc., as well as to ensure the safety of visitors and implement traffic regulations on the day. Furthermore, it will take more than six months to plan and prepare with the police and other relevant agencies.

Dates for the 47th Adachi Fireworks Festival

The 46th Adachi Fireworks, scheduled for Saturday, July 20, 2024, was canceled 25 minutes before it was due to a sudden thunderstorm approaching. In addition, the number of visitors suffering from heatstroke due to the extreme heat increased, and a security guard was rushed to the hospital.
Until now, the Adachi Fireworks Festival has been held every year in late July, but due to health risks such as heatstroke and the risk of cancellation due to weather (wind and rain, thunder, typhoons, temperature, etc.), we have been considering the timing of the festival, including whether to continue holding it in the summer.
After careful consideration, we have decided to reschedule the event to the end of May, when the risk of heatstroke and cancellation is lowest.

1. Reasons for change

(1) In light of recent climate change, to prevent health risks to spectators and event staff, such as heatstroke, caused by extreme heat.

(2) There is a low risk of cancellation due to sudden heavy rain, lightning, or typhoons.

2. Details of the study

(1) The following six dates have been selected as candidates.

A Late May 2020

B Early June 2020

C Late July 2020

D. Mid-October 2025

Late October 2020

Early November 2025

(2) After careful consideration, it was decided to hold the event at the end of May, as the risks of heatstroke, cancellation, and north winds were all low.
