Sake Matsumoto (Nihonshu Matsumoto)

About a 10-minute walk from the west exit of Kita-Senju Station, this is a restaurant where you can enjoy the marriage of a variety of sake and food in a calm space.

Among the daily menu of dishes made with seasonal ingredients, the signature dish is oden. It is popular for its elegant flavor simmered in bonito flakes and iriko stock. In addition to the familiar items such as radish and konnyaku, they are proud of their homemade pastes, such as Kujo green onion tempura, red ginger tempura, and shrimp shinjo made by steaming minced shrimp and white fish. The soup stock, which blends each flavor, deepens the flavor. The alcohol you pair it with is up to your preference, but "Yoemon" is a famous sake from Iwate Prefecture, the owner's hometown, and has a distinctive aged flavor that goes perfectly with the oden. They also recommend finding your favorite flavor with a comparison set where you can choose three types in small quantities.

[(Clockwise from the back) Daikon 200 yen, shrimp shinjo 350 yen, Kujo green onion tempura 200 yen, red ginger tempura 200 yen, shirataki 150 yen, chicken meatballs 200 yen]

There are 13 types of flavorful oden made by adding dashi with a refreshing flavor. Namafu and whelk are also popular.

[Seared Iwate shorthorn beef with green onion salt sauce 950 yen]

Iwate shorthorn beef, which is hung and aged to bring out its flavor, is also a specialty here. The lightly seared red meat is served with a green onion salt sauce.

[Sake comparison set from 1,400 yen]

The comparison set costs 1,500 yen for brands other than "Yoemon." "Please enjoy our 40 to 50 types of sake and our signature dishes," says owner Matsumoto.

Oden Yoshida (Oden Yoshida)

This is a Shizuoka Oden shop where you will be moved by the red lanterns of Oden that you will see as you walk through the shopping street. "I finally reached Shizuoka Oden because I wanted to recreate the black soup oden that I ate at a stall in downtown Tokyo when I was a child," says owner Takashi Yoshida.

Shizuoka Oden is simmered in a rich soup of beef tendon stock and bonito stock, and it is common to eat it without soup. Sprinkle with dashi powder and green seaweed. You can enjoy delicious oden such as black hanpen made with sardine paste, beef and pork offal that is unique to Shizuoka Oden, and daikon radish soaked in a rich soup. The self-service option of selecting skewers from the oden pot placed on the counter is an authentic style. You can also enjoy it with soup if you like. Open from noon on Saturdays and Sundays. It's a fun little shop that you can easily visit with your family.

[(Clockwise from the back) Black hanpen, fuwa, egg, daikon 170 yen each]

All 14 types of items cost 170 yen. Be sure to try the fuwa (cow lung), a black hanpen made from sardine paste. They have a wide selection of Japanese sake that goes well with hot sake, starting at 500 yen per cup.

[Beef tendon meat tofu 600 yen, tuna macaroni salad 350 yen]

Meat tofu made with beef tendon and seasoned with sukiyaki is served with eggs. This tangy and spicy salad is perfect for pairing with alcohol.

In addition to pairing with alcohol, Shottsuru nabe and Yamagata ramen are also popular. “We also have inari sushi for lunch on Saturdays and Sundays,” says Yoshida.

Taishu-sakaba Kuro (Taishusakaba Kuro)

Bar alley at the west exit of Kita-Senju Station is lined with historic izakayas and stylish bars. This shop is located in the middle of a street where you can enjoy bar hopping.

The specialty is the rare curry oden. This is a popular menu item that many people order first when they sit down. When it opened in 2018, the store manager Yuta Tomita, who is originally from Hokkaido, the home of soup curry, created this dish, and tried it out many times in search of the perfect balance with the oden soup. Made into oden with a slight curry flavor. The smooth, not-too-spicy curry matches the flavor of the soup stock, and the flavor of the paste blends in to create an addictive taste. In addition to izakaya dishes such as the famous "black karaage" that rivals oden and skewers, there is also a wide selection of Western-style menus such as carpaccio and ajillo. Enjoy with a wide variety of sours and highballs.

[Assortment of 5 types of curry oden 590 yen]

Clockwise from the back: chikuwa, radish, meatballs, konnyaku, and ganmo. Oden is limited in quantity, so coming early is recommended.

[Black fried chicken 520 yen, traditional red sausage 390 yen, chicken fillet skewers (plum and wasabi) 200 yen each]

The black karaage is visually impressive and has the flavor of seaweed tsukudani. The unique and fun dishes are popular, such as the octopus-shaped red wiener that brings a sense of nostalgia.

You will be welcomed by Mr. Tomita, the manager in charge of grilling, and Mr. Nagai, the staff member who quickly prepares the dishes.

Aburi-ya Andon (Aburiya Andon)

This restaurant is known for its famous sake from all over the country, charcoal-grilled food, and Agodashi Oden. By using flavorful dashi made with flying fish (jaw) from Kyushu, they create oden that brings out the natural flavors of the ingredients. There are 17 types of items, including standard ones such as daikon radish, as well as Kanto Oden's famous fish tendon, Niigata's Tochio fried tofu, homemade fish cakes, sardine balls, and Camembert cheese. In the summer, cold vegetable oden is served.

The recommended way to enjoy your meal is to start with a bowl of oden while waiting for the charcoal-grilled fish and carefully selected vegetables from Adachi Market to be prepared. It goes well with the umami-rich Yamahai Junmaishu, so warm yourself up with lukewarm sake at this time of year. Finish off with oden dashi ochazuke or agodashi wonton soup. Open from 12:00 on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, you can also enjoy drinking with Oden in the afternoon.

[(Clockwise from the back) Chikuwabu 150 yen, radish, red ginger satsuma, fried tochio tofu, fish tendon, sardine fishball 200 yen each]

Make exquisite oden using dashi that is made every day without adding more. When you take a bite of the thick daikon radish or large Tochio fried tofu, your mouth will be filled with the flavor of the dashi.

[Kikuhime Junmaishu (300cc) 1,750 yen, Tsukidashi (assortment of 3 types)]

"Kikuhime Junmai Sake" from Ishikawa Prefecture goes well with oden. The warm sake served at Chidori vessel is full of elegance. They serve sukidashi such as rock whelk and oyster tofu on a daily basis.

Seasonal recommendations for sake are updated regularly. "Currently, we are supporting the recovery of the Noto Peninsula by stocking famous sake from Ishikawa Prefecture," says the owner, Sasaki.
